Traditionally, the robotics industry has laser focused devices to perform individual tasks, like the robotic dog who can run a parkour course. But Large Language Models (LLMs) are changing the approach.

"There’s every reason to believe that a future generation of A.I. will acquire the motor plasticity of a real brain," according to James Somers in the New Yorker. "OpenAI has begun hiring a robotics team after a years-long hiatus."

The article outlines detailed approaches to training robots through repetition, such as playing pingpong or tying thousands of shoes, to achieve the ultimate goal of self-learning.

This contrasts with OpenAI employee Vahid Kazemi claiming it has achieved artificial general intelligence (AGI). Not because the model can do singular tasks better than an expert human, but in his words: it is 'better than most humans at most tasks.'
